What is a grab rail and what is it used for?

A grab rail (also called a grab bar or safety rail) is a fixed support bar installed on a wall or floor in bathrooms, toilets, showers, and other areas where a person may need assistance with balance, sitting, rising, or movement. They are used by elderly individuals, people with disabilities, post-surgery patients, and anyone who needs additional support in high-risk areas.

Where should grab bars be placed in a bathroom?

The most important locations are: beside the toilet (one or both sides, at 33–36 inches from the floor), inside the shower area (horizontal at mid-body height, plus a vertical bar near the shower entry), and at the bath entry. For toilet grab bars installed on both sides, the distance between the two rails should be 670–700 mm to allow the user to grip both simultaneously when rising.

What height should grab bars be installed at?

Toilet grab bars should be installed horizontally with the gripping surface at 33–36 inches (838–914 mm) from the floor. Shower grab bars are typically installed at 33–36 inches horizontally, or vertically near entry points for push-up support. The correct height may vary based on the user’s height and mobility needs – our installation team can advise on the right placement for each individual.

What is the weight capacity of grab rails?

This varies by product. Standard grab rails in our range are rated to 110 kg. Our heavy-duty toilet grab rail models are rated to 250 kg, subject to correct installation and adequate wall structure. Weight capacity is always confirmed in the product specification.

Can grab rails be installed on tiled walls?

Yes. In UAE homes, most bathroom walls are tiled over concrete or masonry, which provides an excellent fixing surface. The installer drills through the tile and into the masonry behind, using appropriate rawl bolts or chemical anchors. Our installation team handles this as standard.

What is the difference between a grab rail and a grab bar?

The terms are used interchangeably. “Grab bar” is more common in North American English; “grab rail” is more common in British and Australian English. Both refer to the same category of bathroom and toilet safety support products.

Do grab rails rust in UAE bathrooms?

Not if they are made from the correct material. All grab rails we supply are manufactured from 304 or 316 grade stainless steel, which is highly resistant to corrosion in wet and humid environments. 316 grade stainless steel offers the highest corrosion resistance and is recommended in areas exposed to frequent moisture and cleaning chemicals.
